Atomic Scott

So the Phoenix Comicon has asked me to come out again and help them with their art tour. I'll be out at Atomic Comics this time with Ben Glendenning, Tony Parker, Ryan Cody and the whole who's who of local talent. As always we'll be sketching and talking comics and judging entries in the reader art contest. They're holding events two consecutive weekends in January - 10th at Metrocenter, 11th at Paradise Valley, 17th at Mesa, and the 18th at Chandler. I'll be out at every one except Metrocenter. So come by and see us as we count down to the con!

This is a weekly post chronicling the greatest covers in the annals of comic history. In a medium that demands creativity and imagination, these are the cream of the crop, displaying a level of originality, daring and draftsmanship that truly set them apart. Send me images or links to anything that you think would make the cut. And here we go...

Cthulhu vs Godzilla in Crypt of Cthulhu #2 from 1981. I know absolutely nothing about the artist or contents of this book. All I know is that it is AWESOME.

In the Aftermath of Spazdog

A big thanks to Shawn of Spazdog Comics for having all of us out yesterday. I had a great time. I finally got to meet that crazy Ben Glendenning and hang out in an actual comic shop talking comics! I've never done that before. Ben was such a cool cat (he even sketched me a Green Ghost piece, above) and really knows his stuff. We raised some cash and pears for the local food bank and just had a good ol' time. The Phoenix Comicon was there hosting a coloring and sketch contest which Ben, Christian, and myself judged. A good time was had by all and I hope to do it again soon.

This week I've chosen a cover from a series very close to my heart. It's Blackhawk#263, circa 1983, with a cover from the legendary Gil Kane. Scott's a Blackhawk fan? I know, it's shocking. While every cover from Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle's run was amazing, this one has two of my favorite things from the series: Domino and the Warwheel. Even though this team only lasted just less than 2 years on the book, it's one of my favorite runs of any creative team on any book, ever. DC needs to put together a hardcover collection of this right now.

It's Covered

It's official now. We've got a cover. The amazing Matt Kaufenberg put some colors on my lines and made the best cover ever! We're getting close now, folks. Can you feel it?

Saturday Night (Art) Fever

Hey, Ben Glendenning and Shawn Demumbrum, owner of Spazdog Comics, have invited me to be a guest judge for an art contest sponsored by Phoenix Comicon at the store Saturday night. I'll also be hanging out, sketching, and talking comics. Come by and say hi. Also, please buy something while you're there so Shawn will invite me back. And for those of you who haven't met me yet, yes, I do look exactly like my profile picture.

Five Weeks Too Late

You may not know this, but I'm a huge Arizona Cardinals fan (go ahead and laugh, but chances are your team is worse this season). And I was absolutely delighted today to hear that the spectacularly terrible Dirk Johnson was shown the door. This idiot single-handedly cost the Cardinals their week 8 game at Carolina and then screwed us again at home versus the Giants. Today was a good day.

Corsair

I just finished drawing my favorite scene in "Ambush at the End of the World" and thought I would share a piece. The Flying Phantom's Corsair just gave the Nazis the business and makes sure they know it. I'm very happy with this bit.

Digital Inks

With my Wacom tablet working properly again, I tried something I've been meaning to try for a while. Ed McGuinness posted a page from Hulk #3 on his deviantART page, so I decided to put some inks on it in Photoshop. It was a good experience. It was a bit frustrating not being able to turn the drawing every which way to get a better angle and turning the tablet to get it is impossible. It felt strange and I am by no means giving up the ink bottle, but it's something I'll try again in the future.

Space Ranger

I got a new driver for my Wacom tablet and thought I might give it a spin. Simple, flat colors on a simple, flat drawing. It's no great artistic achievement, but it was fun. I've been perusing lots of old comic covers for the Greatest Covers posts and found this character, the Space Ranger, who starred in a string of shorts in DC's Tales of the Unexpected in the 1950's. Silver Age space fare is good crazy.

If there's one thing here in Phoenix that really freaks people out, it's rain. So that's what makes this cover so terrifying. Tales of the Unexpected #92, circa June 1959, comes from the masterful hand of Howard Purcell. I doubt you will ever see giant raindrops in another comic. Or Green Glob Weirdies. Ever. Shame.

Cartoony Bats

A friend suggested I try cartooning to prevent my figures from becoming stiff. This is my attempt towards that end. And I realized I don't draw that much Batman, so here he is. He's a tough character for me to get a handle on. I'll have a handful of sketches like these for sale at the Phoenix Comicon for super cheap.

I continue my love affair with the covers of All-Star Adventure Comic this week with issue 29, circa 1964. This one features a phenomenal cover reprint from Strange Adventure #163 by Murphy Anderson. A bit of research revealed this title as being an Australian book reprinting DC Comics stories. A lot of stories. This particular issue contained 13 different stories totalling 96 pages!

Mysterious Adventure Preview

Preview pages from both "Ambush at the End of the World" and "The Fisherman's Wife", stories from the newest issue of Mysterious Adventure Magazine, are up on the ComicSpace page. The full magazine will be available in January at the Phoenix Comicon and then on IndyPlanet and from the creators.

Flipbook For Sale

The Imagifreakination flipbook, featuring my first Green Ghost story, The Vodyanoy, and Christian Vilaire's Sew What: I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, is up for sale at IndyPlanet . It'll also be available at the Phoenix Comicon in January along with a sketch cover variant.

Based on the little information that I've found, 1962's All-Star Adventure Comic #13 is a cover reprint of Strange Adventures #133. And what a cover it is. Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson tell the tale of "The Invisible Dinosaur"! And the invisible dinosaur casts a shadow! Looking at the rest of the covers for this series makes me wish DC would collect these into a nice hardcover. What imagination!

Mysterious Adventure

Well, the first proper issue of Mysterious Adventure is in the works so I thought a bit of preview art would be appropriate. This image has appeared on my deviantART page, but now it's got some bitchin' tones courtesy of Matt Bennett . The book has a ComicSpace page where you'll be able to find some preview pages very soon. The book features 3 different stories from myself, Matt Bennett and Joe Dellagatta with Matt Kaufenberg making the cover pretty. So hit up the ComicSpace page for previews and stay tuned for release dates and availability.

Captain Marvel Jr. #87, circa 1950. This one makes it on the ridiculous story choice alone. Who wants to read about the Robot Farmer? Freddy doesn't even look interested in this story. No information on the artist.

My apologies for another late post. I know this is the highlight of so many peoples' week. Exciting Comics #35 , circa 1944, features an awesomely politically incorrect cover by Alex Schomburg. The Black Terror, a Superman-level hero, machine guns down the Japanese while his sidekick, Timmy, steamrolls 'em. Such a different time...

Well, I think this one speaks for itself. I would think a divorce lawyer might be cheaper than a coffin, but it's nowhere near as hilarious. EC Comics' The Vault of Horror #35, circa 1953, comes via the talented hands of Johnny Craig.

Pardon the lateness of this post. This week's cover comes courtesy of Fawcett with Captain Marvel Jr. #13. "Capt. Marvel Jr. carries the ball for democracy!" Indeed. Junior puts it to the Axis on the gridiron just like the Jets are doing to my beloved Cardinals as I type this. Hitler has been a victim of many things on wartime comic covers, but I believe this was the only time he was ever stiff-armed on the way to a touchdown. Unfortunately, I don't have any artist information on this one. If you know who it is, drop me a note.

From Beyond the Unknown #23 from DC Comics circa 1973. I tried to find more info on the artist and I believe it to be Carmine Infantino, but I can't verify that. Anyway, a talking gorilla holding up a library is pure gold. And who doesn't want to read about the "Language-Master of Space"?

Final Cover

And here's the full colored cover with text. This is the part of the process that I hate. Color and I just don't get along. But I always learn a lot. Though that's no great feat when you don't know anything to begin with. Anyway, stop by AdventureCon or Phoenix Comicon and get yourself one of these babies.

Vodyanoy inks

And here are the inks for the new cover to the reprint. My brush and I were getting along well enough tonight. You'll notice some minor changes from pencils to inks. Now on to the colors...

On an added note, most all of my original art will be available for sale at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon for shockingly reasonable prices. This one included. And most things in my gallery on deviantART. So clean out your sofa and I'll trade you some art for whatever you find.

Hello, here's some new artwork

This is going to be my official site so I thought it might be a good idea to post some artwork. Imagifreakination will be reprinting my first Mysterious Adventure Magazine story The Vodyanoy as The Green Ghost: The Vodyanoy in a flipbook with Christian Vilaire's Sew What: I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. It should be available for the AdventureCon in Phoenix this October and at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in January 2009. I'm giving the book a new cover and these are the pencils. They're very loose, I know, but when you're inking yourself, you can get away with that. Anyway, I'll also post the inks and colors and then come by either of the aforementioned cons and I'll sign a copy for you.
