Long Beach Comic Con 2009 pics
Some pics from the first annual Long Beach Comic Con.
Mysterious Adventure Magazine creators Matt Bennett and I.
Matt at the Mysterious Adventure Magazine table. We were in between Old Dying Kitty Comics and Taco Comics. At the top left corner you will see a wrestling ring. Yes, an actual wrestling ring where dorks actually wrestled throughout the weekend.
On Sunday Matt and I joined the folks at the Atomic Apple booth and did free sketches for the kiddies. Here are Matt and Ryan Cody hard at work.

Hellboy & Wolverine
A4 commission. Forgive the scan quality.
The premise: A fugitive Nazi scientist builds a new laboratory off the coast of British Columbia to continue his re-animation experiments, but inadvertantly unleashes something far more sinister. The BPRD and Canadian government send their top agents. Bad things happen.

Original Art Blowout!
I've got a bunch of original art just taking up space and would love to get it out of my house. I've put up a bunch of pieces here. They're all going for $15 each (plus $5 shipping). Each additional piece is $10! I'll keep adding stuff, so check back often. If you see something you just have to own, drop me a line.
Note: These are not commission prices. If you want to discuss custom commissions, send me an email to talk availability and prices.

Hero Initiative Wolverine Cover
I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in this year's Marvel/Hero Initiative charity cover event. 100 artists are given the opportunity to illustrate 100 sketch covers to be auctioned off for the Hero Initiative, a foundation that helps comic creators in need. When I know the auction details, I'll post them here. All 100 covers will be collected into a hardcover book. It was quite an honor and I hope to get asked back next year.

AZ Drink & Draw
The first AZ Drink & Draw of the year was last night and it was great. Lots of cool artists came out to drink and, well, draw. Ryan Cody was kind enough to snap some pics. That Hellboy piece went home with Mr. Cody. Maybe if you ask him nicely he'll post a scan of it. I really didn't drink as much as that last photo would suggest.

FCBD Report
Shawn Demumbrum at Spazdog Comics posted this FCBD report. It was a great time and he even added a little comment that's totally untrue (in a good way).

Major Spoilers
This was a nice suprise today. A Doc Savage piece I did for my buddy Kevin ended up being the Art Appreciation Moment of the Day on MajorSpoilers.com. That made my day.
Coming Attractions
Bill Thom over at the pulptastic Coming Attractions was nice enough to give Mysterious Adventure a little shout out on his site. Go check it out and take a look through all of the other pulp goodies.

OTRCAT.com
I don't know about you, but I love me some old time radio. There's nothing else like it. Maybe I have such an affinity for it because it's totally dependant upon the mastery of sound. Much like comics only need to be seen to be enjoyed. Single sense entertainment is where it's at! And I know exactly where you can get some of that old time radio goodness. OTRCat.com! There are thousands of episodes of the greatest radio plays ever produced. Jon will take care of all your old time radio needs. Tell 'im Scott sent ya.

Art Space
I've been meaning to do this for a while. I always like seeing other artists' spaces and was finally inspired to pick up the camera after seeing my buddy Evan Shaner's awesome space. I lost my studio to my son, so now I have a piece of wall in the living room between the doors.
Up top I've got three framed pieces of art - a Grifter sketch by Jim Lee, a Phantom piece by Evan Shaner, and a Hellboy by Mike Mignola. There's also a couple of sketches by Dan Schkade. There's a bunch of action figures and some books, and a couple of pics of my wife from our honeymoon. My most commonly used art supplies are on the lower shelf. Under that is a print of Dan McDaid's back cover for Mysterious Adventure Magazine Spring 2009. There's a bunch of original art, a sketchbook and a box of supplies under that fedora. The drawers are filled with paper and more artwork. Somewhere in there is a CD player with a bunch of old time radio show CD's. And it seems I've finally gotten photographic evidence of that little pen gnome that raids my art bag.

I Have Issues
I was asked to appear on the comic webcast I Have Issues with Thomas Healy regarding my involvement in the Twist in the Night graphic novel anthology from Torn Studios due out this Halloween. Matt, sorry I didn't get an opportunity to talk up Mysterious Adventure, but this was kind of a focused interview. Maybe he'll have me back when the next issue comes out.

Mysterious Adventure Interview
The multi-talented Bill Cunningham was nice enough to interview Matt Bennett and myself about Mysterious Adventure Magazine in the inaugural edition of his new "Almost 20Q" feature on his blog. Be sure to take a look around his page - he's got a bunch of neat stuff. Thanks, Bill!

Hello, Beautiful
This is my new weapon of choice - the Pentel GFKP brush pen. I got it in the mail last week and it's amazing. It's a great tool for an artist on the run. It's a bit pricey, but for a brush fanatic like myself, it's well worth the money. The only minus is that it doesn't have a refillable inkwell. It requires separate cartridges which run just over a buck apiece. But, oh, does it make a sweet line. For any and all interested, I got mine here. They don't seem to be readily available in the States, so chances are you won't find one at your local art shop. If you wanna kick your ink bottle habit, pick one up.
Project Book Babe
I'll be out at a benefit event this weekend (April 4) at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe for Faith Hochhalter, the Book Babe. Faith was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and dozens of artists, writers and musicians are coming together and putting on this fund-raising event to help Faith in her fight against the disease. So if you're in the area, come by and get a sketch or a book. Faith sure would appreciate it.

Teaser Pencils
And these are the pencils that Ryan Cody turned into the killer piece posted previously. Messy, messy, messy. Sigh. I'll reign it in next time.
Teaser
I've gotten the okay to go ahead and post this cover image for a project in the works created and written by the uncanny Ryan Cody and illustrated by myself. This particular piece was our very first artistic collaboration. It's been a long time since I've pencilled for another to ink, but Ryan knocked it out of the park. He makes me look a lot better than I really am. And Ryan will tell you he's not a colorist, but what he's doing on these pages is unreal. You've never seen a coloring style like this.
Any publishers out there looking to add a cool sci-fi book to their publishing schedule should drop us a line.

Doc's Thing
This is a Thing sketch for my good buddy and fellow blogger, Evan Shaner. Doc did up a killer Phantom piece for me in return. I totally got the better of that trade. Thanks, Doc!

Another Con Sketch
D.C.'s Guardian, whom I did this Phoenix Comicon sketch for, was nice enough to send me a scan after the show. Make sure you check out his website. They're a great group that help out a lot folks.

Green Ghosts
I've been having a bit of trouble lately finding a definitive look for the Green Ghost. Matt Bennett, Christian Vilaire, and myself have discussed this at length. I did a bunch of concept sketches that you see here, but still haven't settled on a design that excites me. If any of this works for you, let me know. Or I could swap pieces in and out. I just don't know...
