Greatest Covers - Week 2

This is a weekly post chronicling the greatest covers in the annals of comic history. In a medium that demands creativity and imagination, these are the cream of the crop, displaying a level of originality, daring and draftsmanship that truly set them apart. Send me images or links to anything that you think would make the cut. And here we go...

Pardon the lateness of this post. This week's cover comes courtesy of Fawcett with Captain Marvel Jr. #13. "Capt. Marvel Jr. carries the ball for democracy!" Indeed. Junior puts it to the Axis on the gridiron just like the Jets are doing to my beloved Cardinals as I type this. Hitler has been a victim of many things on wartime comic covers, but I believe this was the only time he was ever stiff-armed on the way to a touchdown. Unfortunately, I don't have any artist information on this one. If you know who it is, drop me a note.

From Beyond the Unknown #23 from DC Comics circa 1973. I tried to find more info on the artist and I believe it to be Carmine Infantino, but I can't verify that. Anyway, a talking gorilla holding up a library is pure gold. And who doesn't want to read about the "Language-Master of Space"?

Final Cover

And here's the full colored cover with text. This is the part of the process that I hate. Color and I just don't get along. But I always learn a lot. Though that's no great feat when you don't know anything to begin with. Anyway, stop by AdventureCon or Phoenix Comicon and get yourself one of these babies.

Vodyanoy inks

And here are the inks for the new cover to the reprint. My brush and I were getting along well enough tonight. You'll notice some minor changes from pencils to inks. Now on to the colors...

On an added note, most all of my original art will be available for sale at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon for shockingly reasonable prices. This one included. And most things in my gallery on deviantART. So clean out your sofa and I'll trade you some art for whatever you find.

Hello, here's some new artwork

This is going to be my official site so I thought it might be a good idea to post some artwork. Imagifreakination will be reprinting my first Mysterious Adventure Magazine story The Vodyanoy as The Green Ghost: The Vodyanoy in a flipbook with Christian Vilaire's Sew What: I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. It should be available for the AdventureCon in Phoenix this October and at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in January 2009. I'm giving the book a new cover and these are the pencils. They're very loose, I know, but when you're inking yourself, you can get away with that. Anyway, I'll also post the inks and colors and then come by either of the aforementioned cons and I'll sign a copy for you.
