A good percentage depicts Superman/Lois becoming jealous over the other's company or some variation on a wedding. Issue #2 by Al Plastino just presents Superman as a super weirdo. And has Lois doing her best Jenna Maroney impression.

The Mighty Thor #142 by Jack Kirby. Everything is working here - the composition, colors, type. I think it's one of the best logos in comic history. That brick coming apart is fantastic. I'm a big fan of Jack and Mike Mignola, and you can totally see Jack's influence on Mike here, especially on Mike's early stuff.

Rip Hunter...Time Master #29 by the great Gil Kane. I nominate this cover for no other reason than I want to draw this comic. I want to draw Rip Hunter, in his stylish green and red jump suit and bouncing around in his Time Sphere, beating the shit out of giant bugs with a crowbar. This is exactly the kind of book that I want to do. Greatness.

Greatest Covers - Weeks 17 & 18

Sorry about missing last week. I was busy creating life.

First up is Detective Comics #165 by Win Mortimer. It's the story behind "The Strange Costumes of Batman!" My favorite one is the camoflauge costume used for the all-too-common "North Pole crimes". Also, the luminous uniform casts a shadow. Of course it does. I totally get why Grant Morrison is enamored with the comic history of Batman.

Next up is Dracula: The Company of Monsters #7 by Ron Salas. This is by far my favorite cover of the eight that I've seen.

Detective Comics #275 by Sheldon Moldoff. "The Zebra Batman"! Robin's right. Zebras are a menace. Just ask grass. I'm dying to know how Zebra Batman bends lightpoles and lifts cars. Awesomeness.

Update: A "plot" synopsis - Batman and Robin encounter a magnetically-powered villain, the Zebra-Man. But a charge from the machine which gave Zebra-Man his powers turns Batman into a “Zebra-Batman” who repels all solid matter, and cannot regulate his powers.

Amazing Arizona Con Recap

Congrats to Jimmy Jay for putting on the new Arizona show, successfully filling the void left by Phoenix Comicon when they moved their show to May. Seemed like a decent crowd, if only for the Kirkman and Loeb crews. Artist alley crowds were patchy and unmotivated. Or maybe that was me. I've come to the realization that I'm not really a con artist (unless you count my gig with BOOM! where they pay me for being a no-talent hack. Get it?) I'm too busy/lazy to put in any con prep time and produce prints and material that are in line with specific con themes (eg. zombies at AACC). I am not a salesman or self-promoter. Only sold one sketch and spent most of the two days either working on Dracula pages or bullshitting with Ryan Cody, who made a very excellent booth-mate. The best part of any con is getting to chat with friends and peers. Caught up with Shannon Denton a bit. Only got to see Eric Esquivel for a second, though it was a mighty entertaining second. Met the really cool Andy Kuhn. Talking with Tony Parker always makes my day. Ben Glendenning made sufficient fun of my hair. Thanks, jerk. Here are some sketches (only the Captain America one was by request).

Codebreakers #4. Sure, it's a bit biased, but that doesn't make this cover not great. Everything about this Julian Tedesco cover is awesome, especially the math being blown out of the back of Foster's head. And I like that Stan looks exactly like I drew him inside.

Amazing Arizona Comic Con

I'll be out at the Amazing Arizona Comic Con at the Mesa Convention Center this weekend, Jan 8-9. It's got a pretty impressive comics guest list (Kirkman, Ottley, Walker, Layman, et al). I'll be sharing an artist alley table with the very handsome Ryan Cody and will have a ton of original art (Codebreakers and Dracula, among others). I'll also be doing sketches and taking full commissions. Bring a copy of any Codebreakers or Dracula issue and get a free sketch.

Yeah, he's the smartest dude on the planet and one of the best hand-to-hand combatants and tacticians, but he's still just a dude. He can die. And I want to know how to do it. A fast-acting poison or virus? Lots and lots of hand grenades? Sniper rifle? It seems to me it would need to be quick and something so highly unlikely that it may even be overlooked by a brain obsessed with contingencies.

There's so much to love about this Murphy Anderson cover for From Beyond the Unknown #2. But my favorite part is, by far, the hand print on the ship. The way Murphy wraps that print around the angles and dimensions of the ship is beautiful. The knocked over lamp post is solid, having been leveled in stride. Amazing.

I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in this year's Marvel/Hero Initiative charity cover event. 100 artists are given the opportunity to illustrate 100 sketch covers to be auctioned off for the Hero Initiative, a foundation that helps comic creators in need. When I know the auction details, I'll post them here. All 100 covers will be collected into a hardcover book. It was quite an honor and I hope to get asked back next year.

Art Space

I've been meaning to do this for a while. I always like seeing other artists' spaces and was finally inspired to pick up the camera after seeing my buddy Evan Shaner's awesome space. I lost my studio to my son, so now I have a piece of wall in the living room between the doors.

Up top I've got three framed pieces of art - a Grifter sketch by Jim Lee, a Phantom piece by Evan Shaner, and a Hellboy by Mike Mignola. There's also a couple of sketches by Dan Schkade. There's a bunch of action figures and some books, and a couple of pics of my wife from our honeymoon. My most commonly used art supplies are on the lower shelf. Under that is a print of Dan McDaid's back cover for Mysterious Adventure Magazine Spring 2009. There's a bunch of original art, a sketchbook and a box of supplies under that fedora. The drawers are filled with paper and more artwork. Somewhere in there is a CD player with a bunch of old time radio show CD's. And it seems I've finally gotten photographic evidence of that little pen gnome that raids my art bag.

This is my new weapon of choice - the Pentel GFKP brush pen. I got it in the mail last week and it's amazing. It's a great tool for an artist on the run. It's a bit pricey, but for a brush fanatic like myself, it's well worth the money. The only minus is that it doesn't have a refillable inkwell. It requires separate cartridges which run just over a buck apiece. But, oh, does it make a sweet line. For any and all interested, I got mine here. They don't seem to be readily available in the States, so chances are you won't find one at your local art shop. If you wanna kick your ink bottle habit, pick one up.

Project Book Babe

I'll be out at a benefit event this weekend (April 4) at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe for Faith Hochhalter, the Book Babe. Faith was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and dozens of artists, writers and musicians are coming together and putting on this fund-raising event to help Faith in her fight against the disease. So if you're in the area, come by and get a sketch or a book. Faith sure would appreciate it.

I've gotten the okay to go ahead and post this cover image for a project in the works created and written by the uncanny Ryan Cody and illustrated by myself. This particular piece was our very first artistic collaboration. It's been a long time since I've pencilled for another to ink, but Ryan knocked it out of the park. He makes me look a lot better than I really am. And Ryan will tell you he's not a colorist, but what he's doing on these pages is unreal. You've never seen a coloring style like this.

Any publishers out there looking to add a cool sci-fi book to their publishing schedule should drop us a line.

Ghost Zero: Ghosts With Guns, by David Flora, is the first new comic I've purchased in over 2 years. And I'm glad I did. It's exactly what you want your pulpy, noir, vigilante story to be. I had seen David's art on his blog and deviantART page, so I knew what I was getting there, but the stories and concept just blew me away. That's right, stories! Plural! Plus some bad ass extra material. For $3.50, this is the best value in the comic biz right now. And now Moonstone will be publishing future installments, giving this great character and creator the audience they deserve.

What The Hell Took So Long?

Kurt Warner is staying. Even after the foolish posturing by the front office. You'd think a trip to the Super Bowl would give the suits a taste for winning. Apparently the execs haven't bought in to the culture change as quickly as the boys in the locker room.

And part of Warner's new deal involves setting cash aside to sign Boldin to an extension. What a guy.

I can't believe I forgot to share this. That Dan McDaid is one cool dude. Not only does he kick a ton of ass on Image's Jersey Gods (I finally picked up my copy this past weekend and it's amazing!), but he did us the honor of illustrating the back cover of the Spring '09 issue of Mysterious Adventure. Other than my wife, this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

In the Wake of Comicon

I just wrapped up my first Phoenix Comicon as a guest and I had the time of my life! I sketched my butt off for 4 days and loved every minute of it. Thanks to everyone who bought a sketch and a book and who just stopped by to chat. And a huge debt of gratitude to Christian and Rianna Vilaire for concocting a killer con plan and letting me tag along.
I caught up with many friends and made some new ones. Here's a big shout out to all the fine artists at the show - Ben Glendenning, Ryan Cody, Tony Parker, Jenn Lee, Bryce Lee, Junior Bruce, Tim Seeley, Travis Hansen, Dan Flahive, Jim Hanna, Daniel Davis, TC Krantz, Gareth Hyde and Jeff Aden! I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, so drop me a line and remind me. And how could I not thank the convention organizers and volunteers, who made each of us feel like a superstar. Thanks, guys! Especially Brandy and Ashley.

I'll be there all 3 days (including the preview night on Thursday) with the talented Christian Vilaire and the unstoppable Rianna Vilaire. Super Bowl, baby!

Holy effin' crap! The Arizona Cardinals are going to Tampa Bay to fight the Pittsburgh Steelers for the NFL crown! It's all so surreal. After being a perennial 4-12 team, I can't find the words to describe how this feels. It used to be that the preseason was the best part of the Cards season. It's gonna be a long two weeks... Bring on the Steelers!

So the Phoenix Comicon has asked me to come out again and help them with their art tour. I'll be out at Atomic Comics this time with Ben Glendenning, Tony Parker, Ryan Cody and the whole who's who of local talent. As always we'll be sketching and talking comics and judging entries in the reader art contest. They're holding events two consecutive weekends in January - 10th at Metrocenter, 11th at Paradise Valley, 17th at Mesa, and the 18th at Chandler. I'll be out at every one except Metrocenter. A big thanks to Shawn of Spazdog Comics for having all of us out yesterday. I had a great time. I finally got to meet that crazy Ben Glendenning and hang out in an actual comic shop talking comics! I've never done that before. Ben was such a cool cat (he even sketched me a Green Ghost piece, above) and really knows his stuff. We raised some cash and pears for the local food bank and just had a good ol' time. The Phoenix Comicon was there hosting a coloring and sketch contest which Ben, Christian, and myself judged. A good time was had by all and I hope to do it again soon.

This week I've chosen a cover from a series very close to my heart. It's Blackhawk#263, circa 1983, with a cover from the legendary Gil Kane. Scott's a Blackhawk fan? I know, it's shocking. While every cover from Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle's run was amazing, this one has two of my favorite things from the series: Domino and the Warwheel. Even though this team only lasted just less than 2 years on the book, it's one of my favorite runs of any creative team on any book, ever. DC needs to put together a hardcover collection of this right now.

Five Weeks Too Late

You may not know this, but I'm a huge Arizona Cardinals fan (go ahead and laugh, but chances are your team is worse this season). And I was absolutely delighted today to hear that the spectacularly terrible Dirk Johnson was shown the door. This idiot single-handedly cost the Cardinals their week 8 game at Carolina and then screwed us again at home versus the Giants. Today was a good day.
